Snowshoe hikes: intermediate

Intermediate snowshoes hikes in the Dolomites

On this page, we would introduce some examples of medium-difficulty snowshoe walking. Therefore itineraries suitable for people who are not scared from a 4 hours hike, even previous mountain experience is not necessary.  The itineraries described here take place in the forest or on the white, mountain pastures: they can present a few steep sections; the height differences usually require a certain fitness level (fit 2). The commitment is worth by the wild Dolomite scenery and views of great effect!

VAL CORDEVOLE – LASTE: the wild Dolomites

DAVARE – MIGON REFUGE – LASTE ALPINE HUT – COL TORON – DAVARE

This tour follows a track through an enchanted larch forest. We leave the last trees behind us and tread on the snow, walking on the summer meadows of the Laste alpine pasture. We go further and reach Col Toron, a privileged panoramic point on the Dolomites.

VAL BADIA – PEDRACES: an ancient monastery is the start of this hike

PEDRACES – LITTLE CHURCH SAS DELA CRUSC – SAN CASSIANO

The Pedraces ski-lifts take us to higher altitudes, where we soon reach the little church and the ancient monastery of Sas dela Crusc: this building, situated at 1900 metres above sea level, beneath the impressive, sunny walls of Sas dela Crusc, is a sight worth a whole trip! From here we begin a long, gently descending path that starts beyond the edge of the forest but soon enters an enchanted forest that offers, in addition to the charm of the forest, countless views both of the walls on our left and of Val Badia on our right. The route ends near the houses of San Cassiano.

DEPTH: 450 meters downhill

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO – 5 TORRI: visit the 5 towers of the Dolomites

BAI AND DONES – 5 TORRI REFUGE – SCOIATTOLI REFUGE

This itinerary runs along a splendid fir forest which slowly allows us to gain height until the view opens up to the 5 torri, this monument of nature is so close to us that we soon get under its walls and among its boulders, to lose ourselves in the maze of rocks, until we come out in sight of the Scoiattoli refuge where a well-deserved refreshment awaits us. The 5 Torri ski lifts soon take us back to our starting point.

DEPTH: 350 meters uphill

LUNCH: packed lunch or in the refuge.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO- PASSO GIAU: a sunny snowshoe walking

PASSO GIAU- BECO DE RA MAROGNA- MALGA GIAU- PASSO GIAU

This beautiful circular route goes through what, under the snow cover, are summer pastures that in the summer season resound with cowbells. The route takes us first to a hill from which we can enjoy a privileged view of the walls of the Lastoi di Formin, then to the Giau malga and finally back to the starting point.

LEVEL: 250 meters uphill and downhill.

LUNCH: packed lunch or at the malga.

VAL BADIA – VALPAROLA PASS: an historical tour

RIFUGIO VALPAROLA – MALGHE DI VAL PAROLA – ARMENTAROLA

This itinerary starts at the Valparola pass, as soon as we leave the main road we are immersed in a solitary and fascinating environment. Having reached a wide saddle, we begin the long descent along “Camera” meadows, which initially have a rather steep slope that will easily cause more than a few falls, then gradually the slope decreases and the landscape changes, becoming typical of the beautiful forests of Dolomite firs. Finally we reach Armentarola where the bus takes us back to our starting point.

LEVEL: 550 meters downhill.

LUNCH: packed lunch.
