Gran Paradiso ski-tour

A 5 days ski-tour on Gran Paradiso

Gran Paradiso is a splendid peak of 4061 meters: it is located inside the Gran Paradiso park, a wild and fascinating environment. This 5-day ski tour is one of the most beautiful in the Alps, perhaps less famous and frequented than Chamonix-Zermatt and for this reason more recommendable. The tour includes the departure and the return to Cogne along a complete ring and 4 nights in refuge. The highlights of this tour are for sure the italian huts, where the friendly atmosphere will make you feel welcomed and relaxed, but the highest point of this tour is literally reached on day 3, when the Gran Paradiso ascent is scheduled: in fact is not common to have the opportunity to touch the top of 4000 meters’ peak by skies, and for sure you will remember this feeling for the rest of your life.

LEVEL: ascent 900 meters.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 2: from the Sella refuge to the Chabod refuge

Today a fascinating and long stage awaits us: we start from the refuge climbing towards the Gran Serra (3552 metres), from here we descend briefly into the Tymorion valley and then climb up to the Gran Neyron pass (3400 metres) from where we can enjoy the spectacular view of the north face of Gran Paradiso. We head in that direction and then take the descent towards the Chabod refuge (2750 metres).

LEVEL: ascent 1300 metres, descent 1300 metres.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 3: Gran Paradiso peak

Today is the most awaited day, we leave the refuge early to cross the spectacular Laveciau glacier and then reach the “Schiena d’Asino”, the ridge from which only a few rocks separate us from the summit. Here we linger and admire the view that takes us from the flat land to embrace all the Alps. Now begins the descent that will lead to the Emmanuele II refuge (2730 metres).

LEVEL: ascent 1300 metres, descent 1300 metres.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 4: from the Vittorio Emmanuele refuge to the Pontese refuge

Today’s programme includes a gentler climb but also a visit to some particularly wild and unspoilt corners of these mountains. In fact we descend through the Noschetta valley passing by the Ivrea bivouac (2745 metres). Now we climb up to the col dei becchi and then take the last descent to the Pontese refuge (2200 metres).

LEVEL: ascent 900 metres, descent 1200 metres.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 5: from Pontese refuge to Cogne

The last day’s programme includes the crossing of Colle del Teleccio (3304 metres): during the ascent the view of the walls of the Valsoera beak is impressive! The descent takes place through Valeille until reaching the valley floor. From the village of Lillaz it takes a few minutes by taxi to the starting point.

LEVEL: ascent 1100 metres, descent 1750 metres.
