climbing routes equipped with iron cables, commonly known as “Via ferrata”, made their first appearance right in the Dolomites at the beginning of the First World War. The soldiers needed to securely climb the mountains to reach the highest positions. In the decades to come, The “Via Ferratas” were to find a renewed fame as great mountaineering routes: through ledges, saddles and buttresses drenched in history! Vie ferrate are to be found throughout all the Dolomitic massifs: Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Brenta, Cristallo, Sella, Odle, Marmolada, Tofane and many others.
Because of the rugged terrain of the Dolomite peaks, only occasionally a summit can be easily reached by a path. This is why, for military reasons during the war of 1915-1918, and for tourist reasons from the 70s, an extensive network of equipped path and walls had been developed in the Dolomites: the “via Ferrata”
A via ferrata, therefore, consists of a mountaineering route equipped with a steel cable, which not only facilitates progression, but also allows, using the harness and carabiners, to self belaying. The via ferratas can be very easy, as in the case of very exposed paths, or difficult when the cable surmounts vertical or overhanging walls.
