A 5 days ski-tour on Gran Paradiso

Gran Paradiso is a splendid peak of 4061 meters: it is located inside the Gran Paradiso park, a wild and fascinating environment. This 5-day ski tour is one of the most beautiful in the Alps, perhaps less famous and frequented than Chamonix-Zermatt and for this reason more recommendable. The tour includes the departure and the return to Cogne along a complete ring and 4 nights in refuge. The highlights of this tour are for sure the italian huts, where the friendly atmosphere will make you feel welcomed and relaxed, but the highest point of this tour is literally reached on day 3, when the Gran Paradiso ascent is scheduled: in fact is not common to have the opportunity to touch the top of 4000 meters’ peak by skies, and for sure you will remember this feeling for the rest of your life.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 2: from the Sella refuge to the Chabod refuge

Today a fascinating and long stage awaits us: we start from the refuge climbing towards the Gran Serra (3552 metres), from here we descend briefly into the Tymorion valley and then climb up to the Gran Neyron pass (3400 metres) from where we can enjoy the spectacular view of the north face of Gran Paradiso. LEVEL: ascent 1300 metres, descent 1300 metres.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 3: Gran Paradiso peak

Today is the most awaited day, we leave the refuge early to cross the spectacular Laveciau glacier and then reach the “Schiena d’Asino”, the ridge from which only a few rocks separate us from the summit. Here we linger and admire the view that takes us from the flat land to embrace all the Alps. Now begins the descent that will lead to the Emmanuele II refuge (2730 metres).

LEVEL: ascent 1300 metres, descent 1300 metres.

Ski-touring, Gran Paradiso traverse, Valle d'Aosta

DAY 4: from the Vittorio Emmanuele refuge to the Pontese refuge

Today’s programme includes a gentler climb but also a visit to some particularly wild and unspoilt corners of these mountains. In fact we descend through the Noschetta valley passing by the Ivrea bivouac (2745 metres). Now we climb up to the col dei becchi and then take the last descent to the Pontese refuge (2200 metres).

Ascent to Gran Paradiso via the Normal Route

Contrary to what one might think, the name Gran Paradiso does not aim to evoke feelings of near-bliss once you reach the summit; it actually comes from the Valdostan patois term Granta Parei, meaning “Great Wall.” Indeed, this impressive massif of rock and ice is the only peak over 4,000 meters entirely within Italian territory. From its privileged position, it dominates the valleys of Valsavarenche and Valnontey, which, together with the Rhêmes valley, form the Gran Paradiso National Park, established in 1922 to protect the ibex. Nowadays, while ascending toward the Vittorio Emanuele II and Chabot refuges located at the base of the glacier, encounters with this magnificent animal are common. The ascent to Gran Paradiso via the Normal Route, while not particularly technically demanding, takes place in a glacial high-altitude environment of absolute beauty that nonetheless requires good physical fitness to tackle. The final ridge section, with its dizzying exposure, offers the sensation of walking on air.

DAY 2

Setting out early from the refuge, we begin by walking over a moraine composed of large stone blocks. Once past the lateral moraines of the glacier, we start ascending the Gran Paradiso Glacier. Along the glacier, we’ll navigate the famous Schiena d’Asino, and after passing near the Becca di Moncorvé, we’ll reach the final crevasse. Once crossed, we’ll face the last challenge: the sharp ridge that will quickly take us to the summit Madonna statue. After enjoying the breathtaking panorama, we’ll embark on the long descent back to the valley.
