Challenging snowshoe trips in the Dolomites

On this page, we would introduce some examples of difficult snowshoeing trips in the Dolomites. Therefore itineraries suitable for fit people (fit 3 on our scale), even previous mountain experience is not necessary, they should be not afraid of struggling. The itineraries described here take place in the forest or on the white, mountain pastures: they can present some steep sections; the height differences are quite committing. The commitment is worth by the wild Dolomite scenery and views of great effect!

This excursion takes place on the Mondeval plateau, a few steps away from the car we will be projected into a lunar and remote environment. VAL CORDEVOLE – ANDRAX: walking on a snowy ridge to the top

CASTLE – SIEF MOUNTAIN – CASTLE

The starting point for this spectacular snowshoe tour is the medieval Andrax Castle. In winter, this tower in the middle of the fir woods takes us back to a fantasy movie. This is our starting point: after a short time we exit from the forest, at the alpine pastures, where a myriad of wooden huts emerge as if by magic from the snow. Once we reach the ridge that divides Val Cordevole from Val Badia, we walk along it, not without difficulty, until we reach the spectacular peak of Mount Sief.

LEVEL: 800 meters uphill and downhill.

LUNCH: packed lunch.

VAL BADIA – VAL DI FANES: a tiring uphill gives the access to the paradise

ALPINE HUT – COL DI LOCIA – UTIA DE GRAN FANES

A steep ascent, along which we sometimes have to take off our snowshoes due to small icy sections, leads us to Col da Locia. It is here that our gaze can finally looks at Val di Fanes, with its majestic peaks, the frozen stream flowing just a few steps away, and the echo of the legends that describe this valley as being inhabited by a population of marmot warriors. The only thing left to do is to walk through the valley to the little Utia de Gran Fanes hut.

DEPTH: 450 meters uphill and downhill, long development.

LUNCH: packed lunch.

FALCADE – SAN PELLEGRINO PASS: reaching a beautiful saddle

RIFUGIO FLORA ALPINA – FORCA ROSSA – RIFUGIO FUCIADE – RIFUGIO FLORA ALPINA

From the Flora Alpina refuge we start to walk through a beautiful wood and a good track. We soon come out of the forest and walk along a wide valley surrounded by steep walls. We continue until we reach our destination, the Forca Rossa pass, which offers us a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. Enjoying the view, we start the path backward and then we abandon it to reach the wonderful Fuciade refuge. After a well-deserved refreshment, we descend to the valley along a convenient snowy track.

DEPTH: 750 meters uphill and downhill, long development.
